Why do some subjects have lower class sizes than others?
Answer: Some subjects can only have a certain number of students in the classroom due to health and safety regulations. This means that for some subjects, like Food & Hospitality or Design Technologies, we often have to offer less classes than students would like (see "Will I automatically get the subjects that I choose?" below)
Why can't I select a subject that I want to do?
Answer: Some subjects have pre-requisites. For example, you cannot do French in Year 10 without having done it in Year 9, so it will not appear for you to select in the portal. If you believe this is an error and the subject should be available for you, please contact Mr Stapleton (via DAYMAP or bill.stapleton884@schools.sa.edu.au)
Can I choose a subject if I have not met the pre-requisites?
Answer: Sometimes. But you will have to talk to the relevant Learning Area Coordinator before hand.
What do I do if I need to choose a subject that is from a higher year level?
Answer: You MUST chat with the relevant Learning Area Coordinator to get approval to study a subject from a higher year level before you can select it as an option when choosing your subjects.
If you are in Year 10 or 11, select either the "Year 11 Subject" or "Year 12 Subject" option from the dropdown list on the relevant line. For example, if you wanted to choose Year 12 Health & Wellbeing, but you will be in Year 11 in 2023, select "Year 12 Subject" on line 2 in Semester 1, and line 2 in Semester 2.
If you are in Year 7, 8 or 9, you must see Mr Stapleton.
What if a subject I want to do it not offered, or it clashes with another subject that I want to do?
Answer: There may sometimes be something we can do, but you will need to have a conversation with Mr Stapleton. Make an appointment at the front office.
Does it matter what order I select my subjects?
Answer: When submitting your preferences or choosing your reserves, ABSOLUTELY YES! However, we choosing subjects on a line, this is not important.
Can I find out who the teacher is for a subject next year?
Answer: We can never guarantee who a particular teacher is. Choose a subject because you want to do it, not because it may or may not be taught by a certain teacher.
Will I automatically get the subjects that I choose?
Answer: No. The number of students selecting a subject is still vital. If not enough students select a subject, it cannot run so you will get one of your reserve subjects. Also, if more students select a subject than we can offer classes for, then you may be allocated a reserve subject.
For example, if 150 students select "Food For Your Future" in Year 9, but we can only offer classes for 96 students, then obviously 54 students will have to miss out! Allocation to a subject in this case is completely random, so make sure your reserve subjects are also chosen wisely!
I have been told not to choose a Year 12 subject because it may get scaled down. Is this good advice?
Answer: Scaling changes from year to year. It depends on the cohort of students, For more information on scaling, watch the video on the right. But the answer is no, this is not good advice! Choose a subject based on:
