FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

I am in Year 7 going into Year 8: how can I select two special interest programs, or a special interest program and a language? (ie: two full year elective subjects)

Answer:
This is actually pretty easy. The first thing you need to do is contact Mr Stapleton (either via Daymap or using this link) and let him know. Then use the information in the document on the right when completing your subject preferences or selections.
Year 7 Instructions for choosing two full year elective subjects

I am in Year 11, and did Essential Maths in Year 10. How does that affect me?

Answer:
This will mean that you do NOT select a Year 11 Maths subject (unless you really want to!). In the portal, you will leave the Maths preference line blank, and select an additional elective on the final line. For more information, view the document which can be accessed using the button on the right.

Will I get a study line in Year 11 if I do a full day VET course?

Answer:
You must first have a VET enrolment interview (either on the designated days, or if outside the normal subject selection times, by contacting the VET coordinator directly). If you enrol for a full day VET course in Year 11, you will select two less elective subjects in the portal. View the document which can be accessed on the right for more information.

Why do some subjects have lower class sizes than others?

Answer:
Some subjects can only have a certain number of students in the classroom due to health and safety regulations. This means that for some subjects, like Food & Hospitality or Design Technologies, we often have to offer less classes than students would like (see "Will I automatically get the subjects that I choose?" below)

Why can't I select a subject that I want to do?

Answer:
Some subjects have pre-requisites. For example, you cannot do French in Year 10 without having done it in Year 9, so it will not appear for you to select in the portal. If you believe this is an error and the subject should be available for you, please contact Mr Stapleton (via DAYMAP or [email protected])

Can I choose a subject if I have not met the pre-requisites?

Answer:
Sometimes. But you will have to talk to the relevant Learning Area Coordinator before hand. If they approve you being able to select the subject, it will then become available for you in the portal.

What do I do if I need to choose a subject that is from a higher year level?

Answer:
You MUST chat with the relevant Learning Area Coordinator to get approval to study a subject from a higher year level before you can select it as an option when choosing your subjects.

You will then need to book a meeting time with Mr Stapleton to determine if your request can be accommodated within the timetable structure.

What if a subject I want to do it not offered, or it clashes with another subject that I want to do?

Answer:
There may sometimes be something we can do, but you will need to have a conversation with Mr Stapleton. Make an appointment at the front office.

Does it matter what order I select my subjects?

Answer:
ABSOLUTELY YES! The timetable program allocates you based on the order in which you select subjects, so it is very important that you select your highest priority subjects first.

Can I find out who the teacher is for a subject next year?

Answer:
We can never guarantee who a particular teacher is. Choose a subject because you want to do it, not because it may or may not be taught by a certain teacher.

How important are my reserve subjects? Will I automatically get the subjects that I choose?

Answer:
The number of students selecting a subject, the teachers available and the specialist rooms we have at Seaview all determine how many classes of a subject that we can run.  If not enough students select a subject, it will not be offered and students will be allocated one of their reserve subjects. Also, if more students select a subject than we can offer classes for, then you may be allocated a reserve subject.

For example, if 150 students select "Food Solutions" in Year 9, but we can only offer classes for 96 students, then obviously 54 students will have to miss out! Allocation to a subject in this case is based upon student selection priority (see "Does it matter what order I select my subjects?" above).

This is why selecting reserve subjects is so crucial. Make sure you only select subjects that you are willing to do!

I have been told not to choose a Year 12 subject because it may get scaled down. Is this good advice?

Answer:
Scaling changes from year to year as it depends on the cohort of students. For more information on scaling, watch the video on the right.

But the quick answer is no, this is not good advice! Choose a subject based on:
  • do you need it for your future?
  • will you enjoy it?
